Two-factor recovery codes

Recovery codes are your backup for two-factor authentication. When you turn on two-factor authentication in WEMASY, you get 8 one-time codes. If your phone is lost, broken or out of battery, a recovery code replaces the code from your authenticator app at login. This article explains how to use them and what to do when they run out.

Where your recovery codes come from

WEMASY shows your recovery codes once, at the end of the two-factor setup, under Your Recovery Codes. You can Download or Copy them there. WEMASY does not show them again later. See two-factor authentication for the setup.

How to log in with a recovery code

1. Enter your email and password on the login page.
2. Click Sign in.
3. On the code screen, tick Use Recovery Code.
4. Enter one of your recovery codes in Recovery Code.
5. Click Verify.

You can also use a recovery code after clicking a login link: choose Use recovery code on the One more check screen. See log in with a login link.

Each code works once

• A used code cannot be used again. Cross it off in your list.
• WEMASY warns you when you have almost no codes left, and tells you when you used the last one.
• If you also use the email code at login, WEMASY asks for the email code first and then for the recovery code.

Get new recovery codes

There is no separate button to create new codes. You get a new set by setting up two-factor authentication again:

1. Log in to WEMASY.
2. Go to My account, Security.
3. Turn off Enable two factor authentication and confirm with the email code and your password.
4. Turn it on again and follow the setup.
5. Save the new recovery codes.

Your old codes and the old entry in your authenticator app stop working. Remove the old entry from the app.

Lost your phone

1. Log in with a recovery code.
2. Go to My account, Security.
3. Turn two-factor authentication off and on again with your new phone.
4. Go to Active Sessions and revoke sessions you do not recognize. See viewing active sessions.

If you have neither your phone nor a recovery code, you cannot finish the login yourself. Contact WEMASY support through wemasy.com and explain the situation.

Tip: Store your recovery codes somewhere else than your phone, for example in a password manager on your computer or on paper in a safe place.
