A popup works best when it opens at the right moment for the right visitor. In WEMASY you set this on the Settings tab of the popup builder. The trigger decides when the popup opens. The targeting decides on which pages, on which devices, how often and for which visitors.
Open the settings
- Open Popups and click Popups in the top menu.
- Click the popup's preview or the pencil icon to open it in the builder.
- Open the Settings tab on the left.
- Change the settings and click Save.
Saved settings reach your live site within about a minute. You do not need to publish again.
Trigger: when the popup opens
Choose a Trigger type and, if needed, a Trigger value:
- Time delay: seconds after the page loads, for example
3. Use0to open it when the page opens. - Scroll depth: the percentage of the page the visitor has scrolled, for example
30. - When the visitor is about to leave: no value needed. On a computer it opens when the mouse leaves the page at the top, on a phone after a fast scroll up.
- When the visitor stops doing anything: seconds without a mouse move, scroll, tap or key, at least 3.
- When a visitor clicks an element: the CSS selector of the element that opens the popup, for example
#newsletter-button.
Pages
- Enter one URL path per line in Pages, for example
/or/contact. Leave it empty for all pages. - Choose the Page rule: Show only on these pages or Hide on these pages.
Who sees it
- Devices: tick Computer, Tablet or Phone. None ticked means every device.
- Visitors: Everyone, Only first-time visitors or Only visitors who came back.
- Pages seen first: wait until the visitor has looked at a few pages of the visit.
- Only from a campaign or site: a word in the link's utm_source or utm_campaign, or the site visitors came from, such as
newsletter. - Shopping cart: show it only with items in the cart, or only with an empty cart. Useful for a webshop.
- Signed in: show it to everyone, only to signed-in users, or only to visitors who are not signed in. This needs your site to tell the tracking code who is signed in.
How often
- How often per visitor: Every visit, Once per visit, Once a day, Only once or Once per return (one popup per few hours). With the last option, set Hours between two return popups.
- After it was seen: choose Never show it again to stop it after one view.
- Respect close cookie: a visitor who closes the popup does not see it again for a day.
Schedule
Set Show from and Show until for a sale or an announcement with an end date. Outside these dates the popup does not show, even when it is on.
Other options
- Visitors must answer (no close button): the popup only closes through its own buttons, for example for an age check.
- Disable page scroll while open: the page behind the popup does not scroll.
- Series and Place in the series: popups with the same series name show one at a time, newest first. Leave empty for a normal popup.
Frequently asked questions
My popup does not show. What should I check?
Check that it is on, that today is between Show from and Show until, and that the page, device and visitor settings match your visit. Frequency settings remember that you already saw it, so test in a private browser window.
Can two popups open at the same time?
Use the frequency option Once per return, or a series, to keep visitors from getting several popups in a short time.
