Contacts are the people in your newsletter audience. In Newsletter & Campaign you can add a contact by hand, import many at once from a CSV file and see for each person what they received. This article explains all three.
Add a contact by hand
- Open Newsletter & Campaign from the product switcher.
- Click Contacts in the left menu.
- Click Create new contact.
- Enter the Email, First Name and Last Name.
- Choose the Language, or keep Same as the project.
- Click Save.
- Click Start verification to send the confirmation email now, or Do it later.
A contact receives your emails only after confirming the address. To put the contact on a list, open the contact and click Add to list.
Import contacts from a CSV file
Use a CSV file with an email column, for example exported from a spreadsheet or another mail tool. Commas and semicolons both work. Names come along, and other columns become personal fields you can use in your emails. A language column sets the language of each contact.
- Open Contacts.
- Click Import CSV.
- Click Choose a CSV file and select your file.
- Under Add them to a list, choose a list or No list, contacts only.
- Tick These people agreed to get email from me only when you can show their consent.
- Tick Start the welcome series for them if they should get the emails that run after joining the list.
- Click Check file.
- Read the summary of new, known and skipped rows.
- Click the import button, which shows how many contacts are imported.
What happens next depends on the consent box:
- Without consent: each new person gets an email to confirm first. Only people who confirm get your newsletters.
- With consent: the people can get your campaigns. Your first campaign to them goes to a small sample first. If too many of those emails bounce or are marked as spam, the rest is held to protect your sending. You can then send them a confirmation email instead.
People who unsubscribed earlier, whose address bounced or who marked your email as spam are skipped and stay as they are.
Export your contacts
Click Export CSV on the Contacts page to download your contacts as a CSV file.
Read a contact's status and history
Click a contact to open it. The top of the page shows the status, such as Subscribed, Waiting to confirm, Unsubscribed, Bounced or Marked as spam, with the date.
- History: everything that happened to this person, newest first, such as joining a list, confirming, opening or clicking an email.
- Emails received: every email sent to this person, and whether it was opened or clicked.
- The lists the contact is on, with Add to list and Remove from list.
Contacts that no longer get mail
WEMASY stops mailing an address that bounces or a person who marked an email as spam. Use the filter Not mailed (bounced or spam) on the Contacts page to see them. If an address works again, for example a full mailbox that was emptied, open the contact and click Send to this address again. If mail does not arrive again, mailing stops again.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit on the number of contacts?
Your plan sets how many contacts a project can have. Open Project settings and go to Usage to see how many you use.
Does an import overwrite a contact's language?
No. A known contact's language is never overwritten by a signup or an import.
