If your domain is registered at another company, you can transfer it to WEMASY. After the transfer you manage the domain, its DNS and its yearly renewal in WEMASY, next to your website. A transfer is optional: you can also keep the domain where it is and point it to WEMASY with DNS records.
Before you begin
Prepare these things at your current company first:
- Turn off the transfer lock (also called registrar lock) on the domain.
- Request the EPP code, also called the authorization code or auth code.
- Check that the email address in the domain's owner details still works.
A transfer is paid. The price per year is shown next to the domain when you select it.
Start the transfer
- Click your avatar in the top right corner and select Domains.
- Click Register a domain.
- Type your domain name and click Search.
- Your domain shows as Not available, because you already own it. Click Transfer next to it.
- Click Configure domains.
The Transfer button only appears for extensions that WEMASY can transfer.
Configure and pay
- Under Transfer authentication, paste the code in EPP / auth code.
- Under Domain holder, pick a holder profile or click New.
- Leave the routing on WEMASY DNS, or click Show advanced options to choose custom nameservers.
- Click Continue to contact details.
- Fill in Your contact details.
- Click Pay & Register.
- Complete the payment.
Check the code carefully before you pay. A wrong code makes the transfer fail.
How long a transfer takes
The domain shows Pending while the transfer runs. Some extensions, such as .nl, .be, .de, .eu and .uk, usually move the same day. Others, such as .com, can take up to about a week, because the current company gets time to approve or refuse the move. WEMASY checks the status for you and emails you when the transfer is complete. The domain then shows Active and gets its yearly renewal in WEMASY.
If the transfer fails, for example because the code is wrong or the domain is still locked at the old company, WEMASY opens a support ticket automatically and contacts you about the next steps and your refund.
After the transfer
With WEMASY DNS, the records of the domain are managed in WEMASY. Check them under DNS Configuration on the domain's detail page, especially your MX records if you use email on the domain. See DNS records and templates. To show your website on the domain, see Connecting a WEMASY domain to your project.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the EPP code?
In the control panel of the company where your domain is registered now. Look for a setting called EPP code, auth code or transfer code, or ask their support.
Does my website go offline during the transfer?
Not if the DNS records stay the same. Note your current records before you start, and check them in WEMASY after the transfer.
Do I have to transfer my domain to use it with WEMASY?
No. You can keep it at your current company and point it to WEMASY. See Connecting an existing domain.
