Connecting a WEMASY domain to your project

Learn how to connect a domain from your WEMASY account to a project, check its DNS records, publish on it and disconnect it again.

A domain you register or transfer in Domains belongs to your account. It does not show a website until you connect it to a project. This article explains how to connect a domain from your WEMASY account to a project, how to check that its DNS points to your website, and how to disconnect it again.

Before you begin

  • The domain shows Active in Domains.
  • The project has a paid plan. A custom domain is not available on a free project. See the pricing page.

When you register a domain from the domain step of a project, WEMASY connects it to that project for you, and you can skip this article.

Add the domain to your project

  1. Open the project you want to use the domain for.
  2. Click the gear icon next to the project switcher in the top bar.
  3. Open the General tab.
  4. Under Domain Configuration, select Custom Domain.
  5. Enter the domain in the Domain Name field, for example example.com.
  6. Click Save domain settings.

WEMASY now shows the A records the domain needs under Add the following records.

Check the DNS records of the domain

A domain registered with WEMASY DNS already gets A records that point to WEMASY hosting. Check that they match the address in your project settings:

  1. Click your avatar in the top right corner and select Domains.
  2. Click Domains in the left menu.
  3. Click the domain.
  4. Under DNS Configuration, click DNS.
  5. Choose Inline DNS Records.
  6. Check that the A records for @ and www have the address your project settings show.
  7. If an address differs, change the Value of that record.
  8. Click Save DNS Configuration.

If the domain uses Custom Nameservers, add the A records at the company that runs those nameservers instead.

Confirm and publish

  1. Go back to the General tab of the project settings.
  2. Click I have added the DNS records.
  3. Click Yes, I've Added Them.
  4. Wait until the DNS Status shows Verified. Click Recheck DNS to check again.
  5. Publish your website.

WEMASY sets up the secure connection (SSL) for the domain once the DNS points to WEMASY.

See which project a domain is connected to

On the domain's detail page in Domains, a connected domain shows Connected to WEMASY Hosting with the project it is linked to after Linked to project. The DNS records are hidden then, so you do not take your website offline by accident.

Disconnect a domain

  1. Open the domain in Domains.
  2. Click Disconnect from Hosting.
  3. Confirm.

Your website is no longer reachable on the domain after this, until you connect a new domain or point the DNS elsewhere. The domain itself stays in your account.

For a domain registered at another company, see Connecting an existing domain. If the domain does not work after connecting, see DNS configuration guide.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use one domain for two projects?

No. A domain shows one website. To send a second domain to the same website, connect the domain to the project or set up a redirect.

How long does it take before my website shows on the domain?

Often within an hour, but DNS changes can take up to 24 to 48 hours. Click Recheck DNS to check the status.
