If you only want a domain to send visitors to another website, you do not need a website for it. WEMASY can answer every visit to the domain with a redirect to the address you choose, with a secure connection (SSL). A redirect is free on every plan. The domain can stay registered wherever it is now.
Create a free redirect
- Go to your projects and start a new project.
- Below the create form, click Only redirect a domain? Set it up for free.
- Enter the domain in Your domain, for example mydomain.com.
- Enter the full address in Redirect to, for example https://www.mywebsite.com.
- Under Type of redirect, keep Permanent (301), the usual choice, or choose Temporary (302).
- Tick Keep the path if mydomain.com/contact should go to the same page on the new site.
- Tick Also redirect www. if the www address should redirect too.
- Click Create free redirect.
WEMASY makes a free project that only holds the redirect. It has no pages.
Turn an existing project into a redirect
- Open the project settings and go to the General tab.
- Click Set up a free redirect.
- Fill in the domain, the address and the options.
- Under Where should the redirect live?, choose In a new free project (recommended) or Turn this project into the redirect.
- Click Save redirect.
If you turn the project into the redirect, its pages are no longer published. You can undo this by removing the redirect.
Point the domain to WEMASY
- Copy the records under Add these DNS records where your domain is registered.
- Add them in the DNS settings of the domain, in Domains or at your current company.
- Delete the records WEMASY lists to remove, if present.
- Click Check DNS now.
The Status shows Waiting for DNS until the records are live, then Active. DNS changes can take up to 24 hours. The secure connection follows within an hour after the DNS points to WEMASY.
See how many visits are redirected
Under Redirects, WEMASY shows the visits of the Last 30 days and the Total. Bots and crawlers are counted separately. The numbers are updated once an hour.
Remove a redirect
- Open the project settings of the redirect project.
- Click Remove redirect.
- Click Remove to confirm.
The domain stops redirecting and the project becomes a normal project again. Connecting the domain to a website needs a paid plan. See Connecting an existing domain.
To redirect single pages inside your own website instead, see Redirections and broken links.
Frequently asked questions
Is a domain redirect really free?
Yes. The redirect project serves no pages, so it is free on every plan. You still pay for the domain itself where it is registered.
Should I choose 301 or 302?
Choose 301 when the move is permanent, which is the usual choice. Choose 302 only for a temporary redirect.
