Analytics & Insights is built to respect your visitors' privacy choices. What WEMASY collects depends on whether a visitor allows analytics in your cookie consent bar, and on how long you want returning visitors to be recognized. This article explains both, so you know why some visits have more detail than others and which setting fits your website.
What is collected with and without consent
If your website shows the cookie consent bar, visitors choose whether they allow analytics.
- Without consent, WEMASY still counts the visit and the pages viewed, with a shortened IP address. No clicks, events, time on site or recordings are collected.
- With consent, WEMASY also collects clicks, events and time on site, and makes a session recording.
This is why some sessions show pages but zero clicks, and why not every visit has a recording or a heatmap click.
To turn the cookie consent bar on or off, see Cookie consent bar.
The visitor recognition window
WEMASY recognizes a returning visitor without storing who that visitor is. The visitor recognition window sets how long a returning visitor stays recognized. A shorter window is more privacy friendly. A longer window lets you follow a visitor across more days, for example to see that someone came back three days later and then sent a form.
Change the window
- Open Project Setting with the configuration icon next to the project switcher.
- Open the Analytics tab.
- Find Visitor recognition window.
- Pick a Window: 1, 7, 14, 21 or 30 days.
- Click Save.
You see Visitor window saved when the change is stored. It applies to new visits.
Which window to choose
- 1 day (strict privacy, no banner needed): a visitor is only recognized on the same day. Choose this if you want the most privacy friendly setup.
- 7 days or longer: you can see returning visitors over more days. A window longer than one day means you follow visitors across days, so mention analytics in your privacy statement and consider showing the cookie consent bar.
Whatever you choose, a single session still ends after 30 minutes without activity.
Other privacy settings in Analytics
- Leave out your own visits and visits from certain countries with Exclude Settings. See Filter and exclude settings.
- Only people with access to your project can see your analytics data and recordings.
Your responsibility as website owner
You decide what your website shows to visitors. Describe in your privacy statement that you use analytics and session recordings, and check which rules apply in the countries of your visitors. For how WEMASY handles data, see Data and Privacy.
Tip: if you are unsure which window to use, start with 1 day. You can make it longer later, and the change applies from that moment on.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a visitor show up as new every day?
With a 1 day window, a visitor is only recognized on the same day. Choose a longer window in Project Setting on the Analytics tab to recognize returning visitors over more days.
Can I see who a visitor is?
No. Analytics shows what visitors did, their country, device and browser, but not their name. If visitors sign in on your website, for example to a customer account, you can filter sessions by the signed in user.
