Microsoft Copilot search is different from Google's AI Overviews. It is different from Claude. Copilot runs on Bing's search index combined with OpenAI's language models. This creates a different ranking dynamic and a different opportunity for creators.

When Copilot selects sources, it weighs several factors. First, Bing ranking position matters. The number one result is more likely to be cited than the number five result. But this advantage is not linear. It is exponential. Being first is worth far more than being fifth.

Second, content structure matters. Copilot prefers content with clear question-answer patterns, structured data, and direct factual statements. If Copilot can extract a sentence from your page and quote it directly, that sentence is more likely to be cited.

Third, domain authority matters. High-traffic domains earn three times more citations than low-traffic domains. This includes both overall domain authority and traffic history.

Fourth, entity clarity matters. This is Copilot's most critical ranking factor. Copilot builds a model of your entity. What do you do. Who do you serve. How are you different. The clearer your entity is to Copilot, the more confident Copilot is in citing you.

Citation concentration matters

Because citations are so concentrated at the top, ranking first is dramatically more valuable on Copilot than ranking third or fourth.

This creates a challenge for smaller creators. If you rank fifth on Bing for a query, being cited by Copilot is unlikely. But it is not impossible. If your content has stronger citation signals than the pages ranking above you, Copilot can still cite you.

Your page should display author credentials. E-E-A-T matters. If readers do not know who wrote the article or what their expertise is, Copilot is less confident citing you.

Microsoft released the AI Performance report in February 2026. This report shows how often Copilot cites your pages and tracks your performance across Bing AI summaries and partner integrations.
